7 Tips for New Marathoner Runners

It wasn’t all that long ago that the only people that ran marathons where those that were pretty ‘serious’ about running. Fast forward to today and it seems that anyone and everyone is training for a marathon. While we at UESCA think this is a good thing, it’s also important to note that for many new marathoners, the learning curve can be a bit steep.

Here are SEVEN TIPS for new marathoners to pay attention to:

CAN YOU COMMIT?

For better or worse, training for a marathon takes a lot of time. Add to this work and family demands and you’ve got a full plate! So before you register for a marathon, be sure that you can commit to the time required during the training process.

ACHIEVE BALANCE

Unfortunately you can’t pause the rest of your life while you train for a marathon. Family, work, social, etc… these demands on your time are still there. And let’s not forget about getting adequate amounts of sleep. Balancing training with the rest of your life is critical to success both on race day and in life!

TEST IN TRAINING

Whether it be pacing, nutritional strategies, apparel/shoe selection or programming, be sure to use your training to figure out what to do on race day. This is the best way to figure out what works and more importantly, what doesn’t. Remember, nothing new on race day!

RESPECT REST DAYS

A lot of runners run hard on easy days and easy on hard days. This is often done by new runners that don’t appreciate the value of a well-structured training program and how one day affects another. Running hard just because you feel good isn’t a recipe for success.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

To reach your potential as a runner will require you to push through discomfort and fatigue. However, pushing through sickness, pain/injury and extreme fatigue will only put you behind… not ahead.

TRIAL RUN

The experience of race day is can only really be experienced on race day. For example, how your stomach handles a particular type of food in training might be drastically different than how it handles it on race day with all of the race day nerves.

It’s easy to get your pacing right during training runs but come race day with tons of other runners, adrenaline and the atmosphere of the race – runners (especially new runners) often start off too fast.

Signing up for a shorter race to try out different things is a smart way to prepare for the big day!

GET A COACH

Given that we certify running coaches, we might be a tad bit bias here but we believe that especially for new runners, hiring a running coach is worth every penny. Hiring an experienced running coach will help steer you to your goal race with the best chance for success.
